To rain or not to rain, that is the question. Recreation staff have to walk a fine line when it comes to weather conditions.

Staff is keenly aware of the recent drought experienced by our great state and we are rooting for rain with the rest of our fellow residents.

Believe it or not, both rainy conditions and fair weather play a major role in our ability to host successful events.

Obviously, it is better for us when events such as Market Days beginning March 17, and Toons@Noon, held the final Friday of the month starting in March, are graced with sunny and mild conditions, but for some of our events and job duties rain is essential.

These days, it's a great feeling to notify our sports complex managers that irrigation controls need to be off because the daily forecast calls for more than light dew in the morning. Not only will the ball fields get some much needed natural watering, but it also means we are one step closer to replenishing the lake at Ethel Lee Tracy Park so that we can again host our Family Fish Out on March 31.

Also the much-needed rain could allow the Guadalupe to have the flow needed to accept more than 40 kayakers who sign up for our Kayak Clinic in August.

So, for sake of our farmers, ranchers, residents and our upcoming recreation events, it's no longer a question. Bring on the rain.

League sign-ups are in full swing for youth and adult sports. This is a great way to hang out with old friends and meet new ones.

It is also a great way for the youth to learn teamwork and dedication. Not to mention a great way to spend family time. Do yourself and your child a favor and sign up soon.
