A 25-year-old Victoria man was injured in a traffic crash late Wednesday night on U.S. Highway 59 in Jackson County.

Nicholas Perez was in critical but stable condition Thursday after surgery at Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, said Department of Public Safety spokesman Trooper Gerald Bryant.

The two-vehicle crash happened about 11 p.m. at the El Toro exit of the highway, Bryant said.

Perez, who was driving north in a 1992 Cadillac, had begun to exit when he cut through the grass and back onto the highway, Bryant said.

The Cadillac was struck broadside on the driver's side by a Dodge Caravan traveling north on the highway.

The driver of the Dodge, 46-year-old Melissa Ryan, of Bay City, and a passenger, Robert Allen Perry, 51, of Clute, were taken by ambulance to Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, where they were treated and released, Bryant said.

Before the crash, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office had received reports of a vehicle matching the description of the Cadillac traveling on the wrong side of U.S. Highway 59, Bryant said.

The crash is being investigated by DPS Trooper James Vinson.
