Svatek slams pins for bowling high series

Mark Svatek opened Rolling Thunder League action with an excellent 246 high game, giving him a nice start toward the weekly high series.

He followed with games of 193 and 222 to total 661 for the night.

Mike Stacy started the same league with a spare in the first frame and then 10 strikes in a row before a nine-pin count stopped his bid for an 11-strikes-in-a-row award and finished with a 289 game.

Unfortunately for Stacy, he lost his carry and could not come close to his opening game, finishing with a 655 set and second high.

Other nice scores for the men were Michael Conchola (245-647), Kim Blake (267-643), Mike Osterson (642) and Chris Martinka (254).

Olivia Jackson was high for the ladies while competing in the Rolling Thunder League.

She rolled a 201 high game on her way to a 555 set.

Michelle Bonuz was second high with a 203-549.

Victoria Latin Bowlers Tournament

The 35th Annual Victoria Latin Bowlers Tournament was competed last weekend at Century Lanes, and, according to tournament director Lee Caballero, the overall scores were higher than in recent years.

In the men's team event, a team from Houston, End Results, won with a six-game handicap score of 6,675.

A local team, Shoot Um, tied for fifth, earning the last money spot with a score of 6,394.

The ladies top score was 6,564 by Team Latoya, from San Antonio. Team Gabrysch, from Victoria, won third-place money with a score of 6,340.

Isaac Barajas, from Round Rock, won the individual men's title with a score 1,534. He bowled a 300 game on Sunday, contributing towards an excellent 799 series.

The highest individual score in the tournament is a 300 game and 813 series, bowled by Kirby Pitts several years ago.

Victorian Joe Blount earned third-place money with a score of 1,466.

Becky Bowen, from Corpus Christi, won the ladies individual title with a score of 1,473.

Local bowler Rebekah Martinez rolled a 256 scratch game and 639 series to help Team Gabrysch into third place and also garned second place individually.

Another Victorian, Bobbie Long placed fourth individually with a 1,400 score.


The Victoria USBC Associaiton will hold its annual dinner with the presentation of this year's local hall of fame inductees, scholarship winners and introduction of the directors elected for a new three-year term.

The dinner will held at Vera Cruz Restaurant on July 28 at 6:30 p.m.

This year's hall of fame inductees will be Juanita Rigamonti, Barbara Bridges, Chris Guerra and Lee Caballero.

The dinner will be open to the general public. If you are interested in attending for a $15 per person dinner of steak and trimmings, contact Jim Mooney at 361-550-6917 by July 23.

Past Victoria Hall of Fame members are invited as guests, but make sure to R.S.V.P. to Mooney by July 23.
