Power outage in Wharton, Matagorda counties due to gas well blowout
June 20, 2012 at 1:20 a.m.
On Tuesday, one of the 69,000 volt lines that supply power to some of the Wharton County Electric Co-op's members in Wharton and Matagorda counties was shut down for safety reasons.
Power could be completely restored by Thursday, according to early estimates.
A nearby gas well experienced a blowout, spewing liquid and gas into the air near the power lines.
To ensure safety during the repairs and to prevent any further damage, the power line was de-energized, causing WCEC members in the Clemville, Markham, Midfield and South Danevang areas to be out of power. Partial power was restored Tuesday, but affected people should prepare to be out of power until the well is capped and the necessary repairs are made.
