The Victoria Fire Department will participate in the funeral services for the young firefighter who died Tuesday in an off-duty motorcycle wreck.

Daniel Teinert, 22, of Victoria, was found in the brush alongside Spring Creek Road and the 5500 block of North Main Street, said Victoria Police Sgt. Eline Moya.

The death is still under investigation, Moya said, although preliminary results indicate speed was a factor in the wreck.

Victoria Fire Chief Taner Drake said the Honor Guard will begin and end the service and the department will place fire trucks along the route to the cemetery.

"We are going to participate, with the family's wishes," Drake said. "They are very proud of Daniel and that he was a fireman. . They certainly wanted us to be a part of the service."

Drake said although Teinert, who started in late March, was new to the department, he will be missed.

"Something like this is completely devastating to our department," Drake said. "You can never prepare for an event like this, and so our focus has been to take care of our personnel and make sure they are OK."

Drake said the loss has been especially hard for the family and the crew Teinert worked on.

"He was very eager and very proud to be a fireman and we were proud to have him," Drake said. "His crew spoke very highly of him."

Richard Castillo, justice of the peace, said he has not received the results of the autopsy and he has not confirmed the cause of death.
