A pit bull was shot and killed Saturday afternoon after attacking a Chihuahua and charging at a Victoria homeowner.

About 1:40 p.m., Victoria police officers were called to a residence in the 100 block of East Basin Street.

A woman had let her brown Chihuahua out on a chain near her house when what was believed to be a stray pit bull came up and began viciously attacking the small dog, said Senior Patrol Officer Joseph Felan.

When the woman tried to stop the attack, the pit bull began to charge at her.

She ran into the house and got her son, who in turn, grabbed his shotgun and went outside to save the family pet.

When the stray began to charge at the woman's son, he shot and killed the pit bull.

The Chihuahua died, but no humans were injured.

Animal Control came and took both dogs away.

If the pit bull's owner is discovered, they could receive a citation for their dog being on the loose, Felan said.
