Matthews snares high bowling series

June 27, 2012 at 1:27 a.m.

Dave Matthews was consistent enough to take the weekly high score from fellow league mates.

Matthews started out with a big 257 high game and then followed with games of 224 and 245 to post a great 726 series during Rolling Thunder League action.

Mike Osterson rolled the second high total with an impressive 255 high game, contributing towards a 702 set in the same league.

Mike Stacy was also in the mix with a 256 high game, helping weave a 694 series.

Other nice scores for the men were Michael Conchola (256-673), Kim Blake (668), Tom Crowe (660), Chris Kurtz (247) and J.P. Reyna (245).

Olivia Jackson was high for the women while competing in Rolling Thunder league play.

Jackson was the only lady to break the 600 mark this week. She started competition with games of 187 and 182 before finding the strike pocket and finishing with a nice 236 game and 605 total.

Samantha Wharton pounded the pocket for a 231 high game and finished with a 567 set and second high for the week.

State Tournament

The Women's USBC State Tournament has completed its competition and the unofficial final results have been posted.

In the team event, Division I's Strouds tied for 21st place with a score of 3,076 posted several weeks ago. Members of the team are Delores Stroud, Meredith Mulkey, Pat Robles, Carri Lee and Chrisitne Speer.

In the doubles event, the local duo of Sharon Guinn and Lori Heil finished in fifth place in Division I with a score of 1,414.

In Division V, a couple of bowlers from the Bay City/El Campo association also finished in fifth place with a score of 1,464. Also in Division V, local bowlers Elva Peterson and Erica Moore placed 15th with a score of 1,399.

Donna Janik, from the Bay City/El Campo association, placed 17th on the All Events money list with a score of 2,103 in Division IV.

Congratulations to the winners and for being a competitor.

A reminder the annual Victoria Latin Bowlers Tournament is scheduled for July 7-8.

Although the squads are full, if you would like to have your name listed as a substitute, call Lee Caballero at 361-571-3594. This would be for both the men's and women' s teams.

Last week, I mentioned if a current VUSBC member would bring in a new bowler for the 2012-13 league season, he or she would have their USBC membership annual dues reduced by $10.

I stand corrected.

The sponsoring bowler would have $5 reimbursed for their annual dues for the coming season slated to start Aug. 1, and the new bowler would have $5 reimbursed for their membership card after he/she has bowled at least 21 game in league competition.

A new bowler is defined as a bowler who has never bowled in sanctioned USBC competition before or has not been a USBC card holder for the last two years.

The Victoria USBC Association and the Century Lanes are promoting this reimbursement in an effort to increase the size of the local membership.

There are many league bowlers, who for various reasons, have stopped bowling in league play. This would be an opportunity for them to come back.
