Fire Chief Taner Drake, left, congratulates Mark Flathouse during a promotion ceremony Monday.

The Victoria Fire Department promoted a fire investigator, Mark Flathouse, on Monday to assistant the city's fire marshal.

Flathouse joined the fire department eight years ago.

He has a degree in fire protection technology and emergency management and is a certified arson investigator, fire inspector, fire instructor II, fire officer II, and advanced firefighter, according to a news release from the city. He holds certification as a basic peace officer with Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education.

Flathouse is an active member of the Texas Chapter of International Association of Arson Investigators and the Texas Fire Marshal Association.

He replaces Roger Stuart, who retired in 2011 and is now running for county office.

Tom Legler is the city's fire marshal.
