For 12 years, Mumphord's Place Restaurant has served the hungry the old fashioned way with slow-cooked barbecue.

Owned and operated by Ricky and Keith Mumphord, the restaurant was named best barbecue smokehouse for the third year in a row.

Keith Mumphord said it's their homemade mesquite and oak coals that give their turkey, chicken, ribs and brisket the flavor people from all over South Texas crave.

"It's some hard work and it gets hot back there," he said. "You're turning and flipping and mopping that meat to keep it moist."

Keith Mumphord said patrons "go crazy" for their turkey breast, which is served three times a week, and their weekly Porkchop Wednesday, but ribs and brisket are the staples.

He said the secret to success is treating customers right and having fun.

The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
