Jackson County officials said a 40-year-old Victoria man died Saturday afternoon while swimming in Garcitas Creek.

Jackson County Sheriff Andrew Louderback said the man was swimming near the area where Farm-to-Market Road 616 crosses the Jackson County line about 3 p.m when witnesses saw him go underwater and not re-surface.

Texas Parks and Wildlife helped in recovering the man from the river.

The man has been identified, but Louderback said his name is not being released until his family has been notified.

No foul play is suspected in the drowning. Justice of the Peace Dwayne Taylor was called to the scene to pronounce the man dead.

"From what witnesses said, he was just swimming in the river and we're not sure what happened," Louderback said. "He was overcome in some fashion and then he went under."
