Letter carriers to gather food Saturday
May 8, 2012 at 12:08 a.m.
Letter carriers across the Crossroads will be carrying an extra load Saturday during the 20th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
Postal customers are asked to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday.
The food will be collected and delivered to area food banks and food pantries.
Food collected in Victoria County will be distributed to agencies in Victoria County.
In 2011, Victoria County letter carriers gathered more than 10,000 pounds of food.
During the 11 years of the postal worker's food drive in Victoria, county residents have donated more than 130,000 pounds food.
In other counties, there will be food pantries who are designated as the recipients of the food who then distribute it to people in the counties outside of Victoria.
The annual food drive is a project of the National Association of Letter Carriers in association with the Campbell Soup Company and other sponsors.
