Tornado forces rescheduling of playoff softball games

The locations of this weekend's Class 2A regional quarterfinal softball matchup between Weimar and Vanderbilt Industrial have been switched in the aftermath of a tornado that touched down in Weimar late Thursday.

Eight people were injured when a tornado struck the Colorado County town Thursday afternoon.

All eight were participating in a fundraiser the Weimar ISD had in conjunction with a local Papa John's franchise, said Chuck Rogers, emergency management coordinator for Colorado County. Rogers said the trailer overturned and those injured had to be cut out of the trailer.

He said one person sustained a fracture, while the other injuries were minor. There were no fatalities from the tornado. As of noon Friday, more than 90 percent of the town of about 2,000 had power.

More than 40 cars were derailed from train tracks just outside the city limits. Rogers said none of those cars contained hazardous materials, but the cleanup is ongoing.

The softball field and football stadium sustained damage in Thursday's storm. Rogers said the football field sustained more damage than the softball facility.

"I have seen damage to the roof and the overhang over the stands," Rogers said of the 645-seat softball field adjacent to Weimar Elementary. "There is some tree debris in there."

The softball field is nestled on an incline with trees surrounding the outfield. A Union Pacific rail line is about 400 feet from home plate. Rogers estimated the train derailment was between 75 to 100 yards west of the tracks that extend beyond the softball complex.

Weimar was scheduled to host Game 1 of the three-game series Friday. However, that game has been moved to Industrial. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, said Industrial softball coach Chasity Matula. Though Friday's game will be in Vanderbilt, Weimar will be the home team.

The final two games in the series will be in Weimar Saturday evening. Game 2 will begin at 6 p.m., if a third game is needed to decide the series it will immediately follow the second game.
