The sales tax in Point Comfort is increasing.
Point Comfort residents voted to increase the sales tax from 7.75 cents to the state limit of 8.25 cents.
"The surrounding areas were all at 8.25 cents already, and we were still at 7.75 cents all this time, so we were just raising our rates to be comparable with them," Point Comfort Assistant City Secretary Marylou Valentine said.
The measure passed with 21 for the increase and 1 against.
Valentine said they were pleased with the turnout, considering the size of the town.
The sales tax in Point Comfort was the lowest in Calhoun County before it was proposed to raise it, Valentine said.
She said the move to increase the sales tax was prompted by the difficult economic climate in recent years.
The increase in sales tax will help bring in some additional revenue for the city, Valentine said.
"With the economy like it is, the city needs any additional revenue we can attain," Valentine said. "We don't want to make it difficult for our citizens, but we need to support our community."
