Say hello to Captain Vic.

That's the name of Victoria College's Pirate mascot.

The mascot, unveiled in July, did not have a name until recently.

Victoria College invited students, faculty and staff to submit suggestions last semester.

"Since no one knew what to call him, we wanted to get the entire campus excited and involved in the name selection process," said Tisha Sternadel, VC marketing and publications specialist, and mascot coordinator. "This is Victoria College's mascot, so naturally, we wanted them to help decide what his name should be."

After 100 suggestions were received, a committee narrowed them down to the top three names that they felt would best represent VC. The campus community then voted on their favorite. Captain Vic, suggested by several people, was selected as the best choice.

"Captain Vic best captures the essence of his personality," Sternadel said. "Now when students or children see him, they'll know his name and be able to get his attention."

The mascot was unveiled during a Victoria Generals game at VC Night at the Ballpark. At the event, VC students, faculty and staff participated in contests between innings, such as the Dress the Pirate Relay, musical chairs, and a Best "Aaaarrrgh" contest. Captain Vic also raced around the bases against the Chick-fil-A cow and General Buckshot, the Victoria Generals mascot, and won.

Since his unveiling, Captain Vic has brought spirit and enthusiasm to campus sporting events and student activities. He has also appeared at community events such as Victoria's Lighted Christmas Parade, Bootfest and the Victoria Symphony's Halloween Spooktacular.

Captain Vic merchandise, such as T-shirts, sweatshirts, coffee mugs, caps and tumblers can be purchased in the Victoria College Bookstore in the Student Center.
