Political newcomer Jimmy Solis won the Democratic nomination for DeWitt County Commissioner, Precinct 1, with a victory over political veteran David Ruiz.

Solis received 97 votes to 35 for Ruiz, who also lost an election bid to return to the Cuero city council earlier this month.

"I'd to thank all of my supporters who helped me win this primary election. I am very excited and looking forward to November," Solis said.

Solis will face incumbent commissioner Republican Curtis Afflerbach in the general election. Afflerbach has been on the commissioners court since 2005.
