AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Incumbent Don Willett has won the Republican nomination for Place 2 on the Texas Supreme Court.
Willett defeated challenger Steve Smith and is expected to easily win re-election over a Libertarian challenger in the Nov. 6 general election.
This is Willett's second time defeating Smith for a seat on the court since 2006. The Texas Supreme Court focuses on civil cases, while the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals is the highest state court for criminal matters.
Willett was the clear winner in fundraising, bringing in more than $3 million in donations, most of them from law firms and attorneys. The conservative group Texans for Lawsuit Reform was one of Willett's largest contributors, giving the campaign more than $75,000.
