Shiner St. Paul's Cole Hybner was selected as one of 20 state finalists for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.

Hybner was selected from the 2,633 applicants from Texas.

The award, which was created in 1994 by Wendy's and the Heisman Memorial Trust, recognizes outstanding high school seniors, who excel in athletics, academics and community leadership.

Male and female state finalists are scheduled to be announced Monday.

Twelve of the state finalists will be chosen as national finalists.

Male and female national winners will be announced on Dec. 7 during a ceremony in New York City televised on the ESPN networks.

Hybner hit .565 with one home run, nine RBIs and eight stolen bases for the St. Paul baseball team, which advanced to the TAPPS Class 1A/2A state final last season.

He also had a 4-0 record with an 0.32 ERA and had 36 strikeouts in 21.2 innings pitched.
