A 32-year-old woman, thought to be an illegal immigrant, was found dead at 5:45 a.m. Sunday on the side of a road in Jackson County.

Jackson County Sheriff Andy Louderback said the woman, thought to be from Mexico, was discovered about four miles north of Ganado on County Road 271 near U.S. Highway 59.

Louderback suspects she was being illegally smuggled into the state. She was already sick or became ill on the journey and died before she was abandoned on the side of the road, the sheriff said.

The woman was discovered by an El Campo man who notified authorities Sunday morning.

Louderback said the Mexican consulate has been notified to contact the next of kin.

The woman's body was taken to Victoria Mortuary and Cremation Services, where law officials await the results of an autopsy and identification.
