A Yoakum man deploys to Long Island, N.Y., on Tuesday to assist with logistics and volunteer efforts to help rebuild areas of the northeast after the destruction of Hurricane Sandy.

Team Rubicon volunteer PW Covington, 38, said he's flying out of Austin tomorrow, a few days before his fellow Rubicon Region 6 volunteers, to join other volunteers in New York.

"They wanted me to get on the ground and get the ball rolling," Covington said.

Team Rubicon, a veterans volunteer organization, brings together military and medical professionals to respond to emergency crises worldwide.

In the next 10 days, Covington said Team Rubicon hopes to deploy 1,000 volunteers to New York and New Jersey to assist with Superstorm Sandy cleanup efforts.

"These are things that pop up and can happen to anyone at any time. It could happen to us, and I know if it were my house that were flooded, I would want someone helping me," Covington said.
