Victoria County Tax Assessor-Collector Rena Scherer has done it again.

The Democratic incumbent beat Republican challenger Donna Rodriguez by 1,803 votes on Tuesday. Scherer was one of two Democrats to win a local contested race.

Scherer held her clipboard tight at the elections office as she kept tally as each precinct reported in.

"At times it was closer than what I wanted it to be," she said. "I appreciate all the voters going out there and voting."

Rodriguez was disappointed by how the election went, but feels she really gave Scherer a run for her money.

"It was going back and forth there for a while," said Rodriguez, who was surrounded by family, friends and supporters Tuesday night. "It was a good try for my first time. I do have intentions to run in the future."

Scherer has 30 years of experience. She has completed hundreds of continuing education hours and won the outstanding service and distinguished serve from the Texas Tax Assessor-Collector Association of Texas.

Had Rodriguez won, she planned to arrange the office's hours to better suit customers' needs. She also promised to keep a close eye on local property values and set the budget in an efficient manner.

Scherer commended Rodriguez for her efforts.

"She ran a very good race," Scherer said. "I wish her the best, we got along just fine."
