Area Veterans Day events planned

Many Veterans Day ceremonies are planned through the weekend.

Here are some:

Calhoun County • The Port Lavaca community will have a Veterans Day Parade at 10 a.m. Saturday. The parade, hosted by the American Legion, the American G.I. Forum and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, will begin at Sandcrab Stadium, travel down Virginia Street and end at the bayfront. Following the parade, veterans and their families will be invited to lunch at the G.I. Forum.

DeWitt County• Cuero High School student-led ceremony will start at 9:45 a.m. Thursday at Gobbler Stadium. Principal Mike Cavanaugh will also speak. A reception for veterans will be held in the high school library following the ceremony.

• Cuero VFW Post 3972 will hold a Veterans Day ceremony on the DeWitt County Courthouse lawn at 10 a.m. Monday. The featured speaker will be James Faulkner, formerly of San Antonio.

Goliad County • Goliad will hold a ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday on the courthouse square. Retired Lt. Col. Mark H. Stroman, USMC; and Clarence Robinson, retired U.S. Navy; will be the keynote speakers. Music will be provided by Grace Neicrante, the Goliad High School Band and Choir Boys of Beeville. The ceremony will end with a 21-gun salute, playing of taps, a moment of silence and balloon release by the Girl Scouts.

Jackson County • The Brackenridge Main Event Center, near Edna, will host a Veterans Day homemade stew and cornbread dinner at 5 p.m. Thursday, followed by a Veterans Ceremony of live music featuring Jenny Wiegand and Debbie Spring, and key note speaker David Gregory, of the U.S. Marine Corps. A fireworks display will close the event. Veterans from all counties are welcome, and the event is free to the public.

Lavaca County • The Hallettsville school district will host a program in the high school gym at 9 a.m. Thursday. Breakfast will be served to veterans from 8-8:45 a.m. in the administration office conference room.

• Sacred Heart school will host a program at 8:05 a.m. Monday at the flag pole.

• The Vysehrad school district will hold a program at 9 a.m. Friday at the flag pole.

• Ezzell school district's Veterans Day program will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the gymnasium.

Refugio County • The Refugio Chamber of Commerce, and Refugio Vintage Bank will sponsor an appreciation breakfast for all veterans at Veterans of Foreign Wars, 1002 Victoria Highway at 8 a.m. Monday.
