Danny Garcia, the Democratic candidate for Precinct 1 Commissioner, will take office Jan. 1.

A Democrat has represented Precinct 1 since the 1970s.

Garcia said the process was not easy, but he is eager to get to work.

"The victory is still kind of surreal," Garcia said. "It's crazy. I had my moments where I thought, 'Am I going to pull through?'"

He said he is making contacts with his resources at Texas Department of Transportation, where he retired from, and building good relationships with others.

Garcia is a retired Texas Department of Transportation specialist.

He said he needs to "get up to par" with county issues surrounding Citizens Medical Center and any future policies before making any decisions.

It all boils down to a matter of transparency, he said.

"You have to keep your voters involved in the process so it doesn't catch them off-guard," Garcia said.

The vote likely came down to the main dissension of the race: each candidate's position on selling Citizens Medical Center, the county-owned hospital.

Garcia emphatically said during his campaign that he would not support its sale, and wants to continue making affordable health care available to Victoria County's residents.

On the other end of the spectrum, his opponent, Tony Mallette, a sheriff's deputy, viewed it as a prudent business move and called it inevitable.

Attempts to reach Mallette for comment were unsuccessful.

Garcia complimented Mallette on the campaign.

"To Mr. Mallette, I want to thank him for keeping the race at a level where we both enjoyed it," Garcia said. "To the people in Precinct 1, I want them to know those who voted for me, I am going to do my best to make sure I do what I said I'll do. Those who didn't vote for me, I'm going to do my best to convince them that I am the guy for the job. To the county, I'm going to concentrate on Precinct 1 in hopes that what we do in Precinct 1 benefits the county as a whole."
