Thumbs-up to George Matthews, election administrator for Victoria County. Our elections are consistently well managed, and early voting opportunities and locations continue to improve. He is a model for good service to citizens.

James and Mitzie, Victoria

Thumbs-up to the end of election season. We won't miss all the negative ads and exaggerated rhetoric. Congratulations to all the winners. May you be successful in your office and bring prosperity to the people and communities you serve.

Thumbs-up to all the events planned to honor veterans in the Crossroads and, especially, to the veterans themselves. We appreciate our veterans and hope to see many people in the area doing the same.

Thumbs-up to all the No. 1 fans featured this football season. We love to see members of the community supporting high school sports, and these fans are the perfect examples.

Thumbs-up to American Book Review speaker Norma Cantú and her love of heritage. Thank you for coming to Victoria and sharing your stories with us.

Thumbs-up to the return of the whooping cranes, even if it's a bit slower than usual.

Thumbs-up to James Lucas for his work tracking the genealogy of African-American families in Gonzales, DeWitt, Goliad, Lavaca, Refugio and Victoria counties. Thank you for your work in helping families learn about their ancestors.

Thumbs-up to the cooler temperatures. It's such a relief to get a break from the sweltering heat of Texas summers.

Thumbs-up to Alexis Falcon for her artwork that will be used on the Driscoll Children's Hospital Christmas cards and ornaments this year.

Thumbs-down to the return of cold and flu season. Make sure you are taking precautions, and don't go to work if you get sick.

Thumbs-down to the recent fires in the area. We hope those who lost or had damage done to their homes will be able to recover quickly.
