Lady Horns beat Poth, earn berth at state

SAN ANTONIO - On Saturday morning the Schulenburg volleyball team punched its ticket to the 2A state tournament in Garland beginning Nov. 15 with a 3-1 victory over the defending 2A state champion Poth in Region 4-2A final in San Antonio.

The Lady Horns (32-9) won the first two games of the match, needing extra points to win the first game 26-24. They would win game two in somewhat easier fashion, 25-17.

Poth (29-20) took game three, 25-20, in hope of starting a rally. However, Schulenburg slammed the door shut in the fourth game, which proved to be a battle to the end and the Lady Horns coming out on top 27-25.

Shannon Mikesky led the way for Schulenburg with 15 kills and 32 assists. Kristin Moring led the defensive effort with 34 digs and Jade Bujnoch led the team in aces with three.

Schulenburg will face Brock in the first round of the 2A state tournament Thursday afternoon at the Curtis Cullwell Center in Garland.
