Salute: Petty officer receives achievement medal

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Byanka S. Campos, assigned to the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group, recently arrived in Norfolk, Va., following a seven-and-a-half-month deployment supporting operations in the Mediterranean and the Arabian seas.

Campos is a 2008 graduate of Gonzales High School in Gonzales and joined the Navy in October 2009. She is the daughter of Suzanne Vigil, of San Antonio, and Jessie R. Vigil, of Gonzales.

Navy Seaman Recruit Brandon L. Pedersen recently completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Pedersen is a 2008 graduate of Bloomington High School. He is the son of Stephen R. and stepson of Betty L. Pedersen, of Victoria.

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Robert R. Custer was awarded the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal while serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, home-ported in Norfolk, Va.

Custer demonstrated superb mentoring and leadership skills by flawlessly leading his work center of nine sailors in the receiving and offloading of more than $4 million in repair parts and test equipment, the successful completion of reactor instrumentation and control installation. His outstanding example to his peers resulted in his selection as the Sailor of the Quarter for third quarter, 2012.

Custer was also personally responsible for the flawless performance of the initial reactor startup of both reactors and calorimetric calibration in both propulsion plants.

Custer is a 2001 graduate of Victoria High School and joined the Navy in April 2002. He is a 2010 graduate of Excelsior College, Albany, N.Y., with a Bachelor of Science degree. He is the son of Laurie Custer, of Victoria, and Gregg Gill, of San Antonio.
