Why did you become a veterinarian?

As a child, I wanted to become a rancher. My grandmother gently explained how that was not likely due to the capital needed to get started. She pointed out Dr. Tubbs in Cuero, who was our family veterinarian at the time, and how he worked with all of the farms and ranches in the area and how that might be a career that I would enjoy. She was right.

How long have you been working with animals?

I have been involved with animals and working with animals all of my life. I raised beagles and competed in field trials when I was in junior high and have competed in various dog-related events most of my life. I raised racing pigeons and roller pigeons at one point and currently raise whitetail deer, cattle and horses. I enjoy working with all kinds of animals.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is the people I get to serve. I have many clients who are second- and third-generation clients. I have watched many of them grow up and have children who are now clients. I have suffered with them through the loss of a beloved pet, spouse or child, and I have rejoiced with them at weddings, graduations and baptisms.

What has been your most memorable experience as an animal doctor?

There are so many. I can't choose just one. Returning a sick or injured pet that has been made whole again to a loving family is a joy that is hard to describe.

What is the most exotic animal you've worked on?

I have worked on many exotic animals from snakes to birds to hedgehogs, but my favorite was an African lion that I treated in my first year of practice. I was able to help the owner take him from an undernourished, parasite-infested adolescent to a robust, beautiful adult.

What are three things that you could not live without?

This one is easy: my Lord, my family and my friends.
