For Anthony Pedone, it is never too early to promote for the second annual Victoria Independent Film Festival, and that's exactly what he's doing.

The founder of the film festival is screening two films, "Pep Squad" and "Camp Casserole" on Saturday. Both films concern Steve Balderson, an independent filmmaker who will screen his latest film, "Culture Shock," and teach a low-budget filmmaking workshop in the April 2013 film festival.

"This is a good way to introduce the community to him and his past skills and how he works," Pedone said.

"Pep Squad" is about Beth, who is complemented by the Cherry, a high school girl in platform boots who'll do anything to get her coveted crown for prom queen. Her archrival is busybody Terra. What starts off as a routine visit to the principal's office for Beth sets off a chain of events culminating in kidnapping, murder, decadent teenage partying and mayhem.

The film was almost picked up by Universal but the company opted out after the Columbine shooting, citing that though it was a dark comedy, the movie would be too sensitive because of the tragedy, Pedone said.

"The humor is obvious," he said. "People who liked the movie 'Heather's' would like this."

The second movie being premiered is "Camp Casserole," a film shot by Pedone that premiered in London last year. The film follows the behind-the-scenes happenings between him and other actors working on the set of the independent feature film "The Casserole Club."

The film focuses more on the bonds and relationships formed between cast and crew than the making of the movie.

Both films, Pedone said, show just the kind of character Balderson is.

Pedone hopes these movies will help bring excitement to residents who may be anticipating the film festival.

"It's great to watch him direct," Pedone said. "He gives the actors a lot of space to act. He doesn't micro-manage his cast."
