Editor's Note: To help our readers learn more about the candidates in the Nov. 6 election, we are publishing profiles on candidates in contested races. Early voting begins Oct. 22. Today's candidates are seeking the DeWitt County Commissioner Precinct 1 job

Name: Curtis G. Afflerbach

Age: 68

City/county of residence: Cuero/Dewitt County

Office Seeking: Commissioner Precinct 1

Party Affiliation: Republican

Occupation: County Commissioner Precinct 1

Why do you want to serve in the office you are seeking?

I am completing my eighth year in office and would like to continue to serve the people of Precinct 1. I have the experience needed to meet the new challenges that come with the recent petroleum boom. Beginning in January 2013 the commissioners court will have three elected officials and a judge with about two years on the court. I feel my experience and time served would be beneficial at this time.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

Eight years on the commissioners court qualifies me for this office. I am blessed with the gift of administration, work well under pressure, work well with others, and thrive best when having to multitask. People and their concerns mean a lot to me, as I think of myself as a strong problem solver. I support and encourage the people that work for me, as well as every elected official and employee of the county.

If elected, how will you go about serving your constituents?

As commissioner, quick response to emergency and safety issues and requests for service are important and deserve a prompt response (24/7). My eight years of experience have helped me to become more knowledgeable on matters that are presented in county court. I serve as a person of integrity, treating everyone equally. I will do the very best I can with what I have to work with - time, money, equipment, manpower, and materials.

Is there anything else you would like to discuss concerning your election?

This is not a job that you can just walk into one day and expect to do well. For almost a year before being elected, I visited the court meetings and observed court processes and functions, including the entire budgeting process. These were very beneficial before taking office. I know I will continue to be challenged by the changes in our community; however, I am ready to meet them head on.
