Fire destroyed part of a longtime popular Jackson County RV resort near Lake Texana on Tuesday night.

Five fire departments - from Edna, Ganado, Vanderbilt, El Campo and Louise - responded about 7:35 p.m. to the Shady Oaks RV Resort at 4474 U.S. Highway 59.

Firefighters battled the flames for about two hours before getting it under control. Authorities reported no injuries.

Dan Butler, an owner of the RV park, which is about 4.5 miles north of Edna, said the blaze was confined to one metal, two-story building that is about 30 years old and holds the park's main office, meeting rooms and souvenir shop.

"Everything inside is flooded, and I don't know if I will be able to salvage anything," Butler said as fire crews doused the flames.

Butler said he and his wife, Penny, had just arrived in Victoria to eat dinner when they got a call from one of the park's employees who said the building was in flames.

The park, which offers a campground and cabin rentals, is home to retired residents, construction workers and winter travelers, according to its website.

Butler said he has no idea what could have ignited the blaze.

"I don't have a clue yet about how it started," Butler said. "We're just glad no one was hurt, and all of our tenants are OK."

Penny Butler said the building was insured.

Lt. Kurt Janica, of the Edna Fire Department, a combination of volunteers and paid employees, said about 25 people from the combined agencies battled the flames.

The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.
