A Ganado woman died about noon Wednesday when she walked into open traffic on U.S. Highway 59 and was struck by a cement truck, officials said.

Jackson County Sheriff Andy Louderback said the woman, Elizabeth Marlene Walker, 62, stepped into the highway and was hit in the northbound lane near County Road 453.

The truck, a 1996 International cement mixer, was driven by Henry Thornton, 84, of El Campo. He was not injured, according to a Department of Public Safety report.

Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Dwayne Taylor held an inquest and pronounced Walker dead at the scene.

DPS Trooper Aaron Frazier investigated the wreck.

Funeral services are pending with Ganado Funeral Home.
