A look at Victoria County's top 10 taxpayers

Editor's note: This is the first in an ongoing series of the Crossroads region's top taxpayers.

It was 1951 when Invista's Victoria site began manufacturing the nylon intermediates chemical adiponitrile, according to a company fact sheet. As time wore on, new units joined the plant and the site grew.

Today Invista tops the list of Victoria County's biggest taxpayers. In fact, it makes the top 10 list twice.

The No. 1 spot, valued at $208,395,750, pertains to the real property - the land and buildings, said Adrianna Davis, with the Victoria Central Appraisal District. Meanwhile, the No. 4 spot pertains to the company's belongings - computers and equipment.

The company's Victoria site sits on 4,500 acres and employs more than 700 Invista employees, said Amy Hodges, Invista's regional public affairs manager. Although the number of contractors fluctuates, it averages 200 to 300 people.

Invista's nylon intermediates products are used in things such as Stainmaster carpet, Cordura fabric, safety air bags and more, but the company's work doesn't end at the plant.

"Invista strives to be a good corporate citizen in Victoria and we encourage employee involvement in causes which enhance the quality of life in our community," Hodges said in an email, noting the company works with organizations such as United Way, Perpetual Help Home, Habitat for Humanity and more. "We also are very proud of our continuing wetland environmental science education partnership with Victoria Independent School District."
