The father of a baby girl was arrested and charged Wednesday in Goliad with injury to a child after the infant was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.
The 9-month-old was taken from Goliad to a Victoria hospital on Saturday and then immediately transferred to Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi because of the extent of her injuries, said Goliad County Sheriff Kirby Brumby.
The child suffered broken ribs, a black eye, several bruises on the head and a broken femur, Brumby said.
Emiliano Israel Zuniga, 18, was arrested in Three Rivers on a warrant issued by Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Steven Kennedy.
Zuniga is being held in the Goliad County Jail in lieu of a $200,000 bond.
When released from the hospital, the child is expected to be placed in foster care by Child Protective Services until the investigation is complete.
"This normally does not happen in a smaller community," Brumby said. "It takes a special kind of person to hurt a baby who has no defense. These are, in my opinion, heinous crimes. We were glad to get this guy arrested and in jail."
