A 16-year-old La Vernia girl died Saturday morning when the vehicle she was riding in veered off a road and crashed into a tree.

Kimberly Jacob was a passenger in a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup being driven by 17-year-old Elliot Renshaw, also of La Vernia, who survived the crash with injuries.

The two teens were northbound on state Highway 123 about 5 a.m. when it crashed near Farm-to-Market Road 887.

Jacob died at the scene, an official with the Department of Public Safety said.

The speed limit on the highway at that location is 70 mph, but officials are not certain how fast the pickup was traveling.

Elliot's vehicle was hauling a 2004 custom cattle trailer.

The crash occurred in Karnes County, about 27 miles from La Vernia.
