Edna will be without its starting quarterback for Friday night's game at Sweeny.

Edna athletic director and head football coach Mike Pierce said junior Austin Kelley is being suspended for the game.

Pierce said the reason for the suspension was Kelley "didn't follow directions" after last Friday night's game between Edna and Yoakum at Cowboy Memorial Stadium in Edna.

According to Pierce, Yoakum was dressing in the Edna weight room, which was locked after Yoakum's 21-14 win.

Pierce said as the Edna players were making their way to the locker room, players from both teams began to shout at each other.

Pierce said the players were kept apart by coaches and administrators from the two schools without any physical confrontations taking place.

"There was trash talking between the two teams," he said. "There was never a punch thrown."

Pierce said Kelley failed to go to the locker room when he was instructed to by the coaches.

Pierce said the discipline was handled in-house.

"We ran our guys a lot this week," he said. "We ran them all as a team."

Kelley has completed 34 of 51 passes this season for 543 yards and two touchdowns without an interception.

Senior DeQuan Cantu could start at quarterback against Sweeny.

Cantu played quarterback for a majority of last season before moving to running back and wide receiver this season.
