I hope everyone has heard about our Fall Art Show coming up in October.

The competition, which will be for adults, will open to all mediums including photography. Entries will be accepted from 1 to 6 p.m. Oct. 11-12 at the Victoria Art League, 905 S. Bridge St.

Entry fee will be $12 per entry and you can enter up to three per category. There are five levels of expertise and 10 categories this year in order for the winners to be able to compete in the Lone Star Art Guild show in the Woodlands in the spring.

The Victoria Art League is now a member of this organization and we wanted our art shows to adhere to their guidelines so we could "show off" the talent we have in our area.

You all are invited to our reception, from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 14 where the best of show prize of $100 will be awarded along with ribbons in each category. There will also be a $25 cash prize for the People's Choice Award so make sure you come visit the show and vote for your favorite piece of artwork. Anyone can also view the show from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, Oct. 14 to Nov. 9. I hope all you artists out there will prepare some great work and bring it down to the Art League and make this the best show ever.

Everyone else, make plans to come down and see what artists from the area can do.

If you need more information, call the Victoria Art League at 361-572-0825.

We have some classes starting this month. A new class called "Painting the Town" will be offered from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. This will allow someone who has never really painted to purchase a canvas with a subject already on it and the class will follow the instructor in completing a painting in a two-hour session. Everything is provided and, for $35, the participant leaves with a finished painting. Call 361-782-8339 for more information.

Jim Feig has an advanced digital photography class starting Tuesday, Oct. 9, and continues Tuesdays until Nov. 6. This class is for those who have taken his beginners class or those who know the basics and want to learn more about digital photography.

Jim will also start a beginners' class Oct. 25 on Thursdays and continue for five Thursdays. This is a good class to learn all about how to use your camera. He can be reached at 361-576-0578.

Michelle Evans continues to teach children's art classes with first grade and up on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and pottery Wednesday with all being taught from 3-4 p.m. You can contact her at 361-649-8092.

My classes are continuing in pottery Tuesdays and Thursdays through most of the month.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, Nov. 10. That is when we will have our fourth annual Christmas Market Day and Bazaar at the Victoria Art League. We will have many booths with all kinds of arts, crafts, photography, jewelry and all kinds of other things that would make great, unique presents for Christmas or maybe just something special for you or a friend.

Any craftsman who would like to rent a booth may come down to the Art League to pick out your area. Booths inside the gallery rent for $25, under the outside patio rent for $20 and out on the lawn rent for $15. If you have something you would like to sell, please come and sign up. There are limited spaces and we would like each one to be filled with a variety of items.

I hope you all got to see Karen Burleson's tribute to 9/11 and her other artwork on display in our gallery. The 9/11 piece is pretty amazing and most unusual. The exhibit will be up until the spring show is hung, so you will have until Oct. 12 to view it.

We will not have an Artist of the Month for the next month since the Fall Show will be hanging until Nov. 9.

Our historical building continues to be updated and renovated. Our windows on the classroom are being rebuilt using a grant from the Trull Foundation and our front shutters and doors have been repainted. New doors on the classroom will also soon be installed and the roof repaired over the classroom. As you can see there is much going on here and once again, we thank all of you out there who support our efforts and really hope you can come by and visit us soon.

Bill Bauer is president of the Victoria Art League.
