An inmate in the DeWitt County Jail died Sunday night.

At about 8 p.m., Paul Rodriguez contacted the central control room and said he wasn't feeling well, according to a news release Monday from the DeWitt County Sheriff's Office.

Jailers immediately checked on Rodriguez and called Cuero Emergency Medical Services. Before EMS arrived, Rodriguez became unresponsive and detention personnel began CPR, according to the news release.

Rodriguez, 53, of Houston, was taken by ambulance to Cuero Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday by the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office, according to the news release.

Rodriguez had been in custody since March 22 after being charged with two counts of continuous sexual assault of a child under 14 years old, with bonds of $150,000 each.

Rodriguez is the third inmate to die in the jail since 2005.

"We had two suicides. One in 2005 and one in 2010," said Sheriff Jode Zavesky.
