West High School Senior Chris Henschen takes being Marvin the Warrior very seriously, which paid off when readers of the Advocate voted the West Warrior best mascot in the 2013 Best of the Best competition.
He went to a mascot training camp at the University of Texas in Austin, played to the crowd and even won ninth place at the state mascot competition.
"When I'm at a football game, it is all about the crowd and how they feel about the game. If they are excited, I'm excited. I jump up and down and interact with them. If they are sad about a call, then I act sad. It is all about what they want," Chris said.
He said being a mascot is harder work than he expected, saying you have to stay physically fit to be active in the hot suit, be animated without speaking or using facial expressions and even making a mascot Facebook page for his fans.
"You need to be really outgoing. you can't just stop. You always have to be moving and interacting with people," he said.
