The Knights of Columbus Council 9088 from Holy Family Catholic Church in Victoria sponsored a Lenten food drive to benefit the Victoria Christian Assistance Ministry.

The goal of "The 40 Days of Giving" food drive was to collect at least 5,000 pounds of food along with monetary donations. Assistance for those who are less fortunate is a year-round issue, especially after Thanksgiving and Christmas when most food drives take place.

This was the first year for the council to sponsor this food drive. In order to raise awareness about this issue in the children and young adults of the parish, a contest took place between the parish religious education classes to see who could bring in the most food.

The top three classes were treated to a gift card for each student to the new Peter Piper Pizza restaurant.

The winning classes were Sue Schaefer's fourth-grade class, first place with 283 pounds; Millie Chapa's kindergarten class, second place with 141 pounds and Judy Seiler's kindergarten class, third place with 128 pounds.

The results of the food drive exceeded expectations as a total of 5,750 pounds of food was collected, along with $2,163. The religious education classes collected almost 40 percent or 2,185 pounds of the total amount of the food collected.

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men's organization dedicated to service to the church and parish. Knights of Columbus Council 9088 is very active in all these areas.

Other groups and organizations that have benefited from the efforts of this council include Hospice of South Texas, Habitat for Humanity, the Gabriel Project, the Women's Crisis Pregnancy Center, Nazareth Academy, the Youth Ministry and Seminarians from the Diocese of Victoria and many others.
