It was a slow, shaky start Friday, but the University of Houston-Victoria softball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a doubleheader sweep over the Centenary College Ladies at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex.
The Jaguars overcame a 5-0 deficit to win the opening game 8-5 before waltzing to a 13-3 win in the nightcap to improve to 19-17 on the season.
The Ladies took advantage of four walks, a hit batter and an error to send 11 hitters to the plate in their first at-bat to jump out to a 5-0 lead in the opening game.
But the Jaguars would score in every inning but the second to slowly chip away at the lead before notching the win.
Jena West paced the offensive attack going 4 for 4 with two triples, two RBIs and two runs, while Ashley Shannon belted a two-run homer in the fourth and doubled home a run in the fifth. Brittany Arredondo, Marley Moehrig and Casey Sax each had two hits in the contest.
Alicia Fikac, who tossed a no-hitter in her last outing, gave up two weak singles and walked a pair before leaving on a throwing error after pitching only one-third of an inning. Alex Holland came on and despite giving up two walks and hitting a batter in her first three batters, held the Ladies hitless the rest of the way.
Holland improved to 7-2 with the win as she walked seven, hit two batters and struck out 10 without giving up a run.
The Ladies again struck for two runs in the top of the first and could have had more, but the No. 7 batter hit out of order, costing them a two-run double.
The Jaguars cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first as Arredondo singled to extend her hitting streak to 19 games and scored when Sax was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
