At a Victoria school district regular monthly board meeting, Patti Welder assistant principal Dawn Maroney was appointed Stroman Middle School's principal for the 2013-2014 academic school year.

Stroman's current principal Lisa Cortez will be moving into a newly-created position with the district's administration office as their director of professional services for human resources.

Maroney began her education career in VISD as a teacher at Vickers Elementary School from 1998 to 2005, and from 2005 to 2012, she was an assistant principal at Edna High School.

After graduating from the University of Houston Victoria with a Bachelor of Science in interdisciplinary studies in 1998, Maroney earned her Masters of Education at UHV in administration and supervision and mid-management certification in 2004.

"I am very humbled by the opportunity the VISD school board and Superintendent Jaklich have given me to become the new Stroman Middle School principal," wrote Maroney in an email. "I think it is a great chance to build on the current successes within VISD and continue to strive for excellence at Stroman Middle School."

Board members made the appointment while in a closed session Thursday night.

"It's an excellent appointment," said Tami Keeling, VISD school board president. "She's at the point where she's ready to be at the helm of her own ship."
