At Environmental Services, we strive to always think into the future. What can we do now to improve the environment we leave behind?
How can we extend the life of the landfill?
What byproducts are being produced by our services that can be reused instead of harvesting natural, virgin resources?
How can we prolong or improve the health of our environment for future generations?
There is a true need to consider "going green" - not as a chore but as a necessity to ensure we are passing along a healthy, as problem-free environment as possible to our youth.
In Victoria, Environmental Services makes "going green" as easy as possible with a variety of services.
We are happy to provide you with a list of services that are readily available to every resident of the city.
Automated garbage collection: Each home is provided a gray, 96-gallon rolling cart to place at the curbside to make disposing of solid waste easy, safe and in the cleanest way possible. This service is performed weekly.
Single-stream curbside recycling: Each home is provided a green and yellow, 96-gallon rolling cart to place all recyclable items in. Single-stream recycling means residents can place all recycling in one cart without the hassle of separating recyclable materials. This service is performed every two weeks.
Brush/yard waste: All yard waste and brush collected from homes is taken to Garden-Ville, Victoria's compost facility. Located beside the landfill, the compost site processes yard waste and brush into mulch and compost available for purchase. This organic waste is generated into something organic and reusable for lawn care. Please call 361-485-3220 before placing large limbs out for collection.
Bulky item collection: Bulky collection provides a safe and easy means for city residents to dispose of larger items in a safe, proper manner. Some larger items that contain certain materials must be handled in a particular manner. Please call 361-485-3220 before placing any large items out for collection.
Air quality monitoring: Annually, we contract out researchers through a grant from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. These researchers concentrate on analyzing what particulates are created in and around Victoria as well as the weather patterns that carry in harmful ozone from other industrial areas.
Environmental education: Our staff includes an education specialist available to go into schools or organize field trips to educate about a variety of environmental topics. The curriculum we adopt is aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, so every minute students spend with us is a minute well-spent.
I am also available to make presentations and hold small classes for adult groups interested in learning more about environmental issues facing Victoria and how we can combat them.
It's clear that the age-old stigma of "going green" is such a large chore is just that - an ugly stigma. Here in Victoria, we have green living at our fingertips.
Based on the trends we see in the reports from all the services we offer, Victorians are embracing leaving behind a better world for our future generations.
Remember, you can call us if you ever have any questions at 361-485-3230. Happy Earth Day.
