The UHV women's golf team did not finish Tuesday as champion. But it looked at this season as a stepping stone for next year.

The Jaguars shot a 322 team total in the second round of the Association of Independent Institutions tournament to finish with a 647 overall, good enough for fourth place.

British Columbia finished first, claiming its third straight title with a 576 team score.

Three of the five golfers for UHV improved upon their first round scores in the second round Tuesday.

Jaguars coach Brian Williamson described the team's performance as a step in the right direction and hopes the team will reflect on the season and improve their strengths.

"They're playing smarter," he said. "We're still making quite a few mistakes, which is natural. They gave it 100 percent. I couldn't be any prouder."

Freshmen golfer Becky Benchot and sophomore Brooke Brasseaux both finished with a round two score of a 74 for the Jaguars. Benchot's total score was the second best for UHV with a 157, while Brasseaux finished first on the team with a 148.

Rain did not cancel the first round Monday, but itn did have a lasting effect on the golf course at The Club at Colony Creek.

"It was really wet out here," junior Devon Dueser said. "It was new to us as it was to the rest of the teams competing here."

UHV loses just one player to graduation, which leads Williamson to believe the Jaguars will be more competitive next season.

"Players have been improving, and we had an awesome recruiting year," Williamson said. "We're looking forward to next year and being in contention. We should be quite a bit better."
