The driver of a tractor-trailer was injured Wednesday afternoon in a construction zone wreck in DeWitt County.

Isabel Hernandez Medellin, 71, of New Braunfels, was traveling south in a 2000 Freightliner on U.S. Highway 183 about 2:25 p.m. when a road roller headed north on the shoulder went into the northbound lane and then partially crossed the centerline, said Department of Public Safety spokesman Trooper Gerald Bryant.

"The truck driver took evasive action, but the back of the trailer hit the road roller," Bryant said.

The truck went into a skid and landed in a ditch on its left side. The road roller also overturned onto its right side.

"The truck driver's arm was trapped between the truck and the ground, and witnesses helped free him," said Bryant.

Medellin was taken by helicopter to University Hospital in San Antonio, where he was listed in stable condition Thursday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The driver of the road roller, Antonio Pena, 39, of Nixon, was not injured.

No citations were issued, and the wreck remains under investigation by Trooper Adam Garza assisted by Trooper Craig Wycoff.

Yoakum Emergency Medical Services and Fire Department and the DeWitt County Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene.

The crash was north of Cuero, three-tenths of a mile south of DeWitt County Road 155 near the state Highway 111 intersection.
