Joaquim Richmond, 13, credits his love for reading fantasy novels as the reason he won the July Regal Jewelers essay contest about summer vacation.

Joaquim, who is new to Victoria and will attend Nazareth Academy, was surprised he won the contest with his essay on experiencing Port Aransas.

"I was just like, 'Whoa, that's a lot of people,'" he said about the votes his essay received.

Joaquim's favorite fantasy novels range from the first novels written by author Robert Jordan to Christopher Paolini's The Inheritance Cycle series.

In his essay, Joaquim's love for reading shines through in his description of the beach and how the beach affected his senses.

"It's pretty much like heaven on Earth," Joaquim said, quoting his grandfather.
