Because of dry conditions and the chance for wildfires, outdoor burning in Victoria County is banned, effectively immediately, officials announced Wednesday.

County Judge Don Pozzi enacted the ban shortly before 11 a.m.

The Keetch-Byram Drought Index, which helps determine fire potential and measures moisture, has risen to 594.

The index uses a scale of 0 to 800.

When the Victoria County Commissioners Court decided Monday to delay the ban, the index was at 581.

"I have certainly held off a few days because no one, including the commissioners court, like to implement the burn ban," Pozzi said. "Under these circumstances, it's become necessary."
