Midday Mafia: Pinto Bean has charm, menu to match

Editor's note: The Midday Mafia is made up of five locals who wish to remain anonymous at the moment. Names have been changed to protect the guilty and are as follows: The Don, Two Taps, Walnuts, Jack the Knife and Jimmy Three Cheese. The Midday Mafia will run every other Thursday in Get Out.

Here's a quick look at a little spot you might miss if you don't know what you are looking for - Pinto Bean on Main Street, just south of Mockingbird Lane. This little spot is fairly new to a market that didn't need another Tex-Mex joint, but somehow, it still works for us.

The building is kind of misshapen and odd, which no doubt leads to the multiple vacancies around this loud and fun venue. When you walk through the door, you realize this place is hopping with activity, and there are plenty of waitstaff to meet your needs.

My personal favorite is a sweet lady named Amanda, who I followed from another favorite spot in Victoria when she changed jobs. Sure, we get special service; we are the Midday Mafia.

The time of day called for breakfast, and I ordered a plate called El Potosino, which had two eggs, carne guisada, fried potatoes and refried beans with a couple flour tortillas, all for $5.50. Amazing volume of really healthy food at a great price - OK, at least the price is right.

One Midday member had the migas, which came served on a couple corn tortillas. His silence for several minutes spoke volumes about his thoughts on the meal.

What more can you say about another Tex-Mex spot in a town full of Tex-Mex spots? I mean, when you go to Whataburger here, they ask if you want "flour or corn tortillas" with your burger.

That said, there is something very Mexican about Pinto Bean, and that charm - coupled with the excellent, fresh food, the great service and reasonable prices - that makes this a fun spot to add to your rotation as you support local restaurants.

When you go, be sure to ask for Amanda, tip righteously and tell her the Midday Mafia sent you.

Until we meet again, fughet about it.
