Feet planted on the matted cafeteria floor, senior Kassidy Gonzales, 17, clapped her hands and started counting to eight.
She waved her arms in the air, gesturing pompom movements to her fellow Victoria East High School cheerleaders.
Next to Kassidy sat Sydney Warner, 17, who observed practice alongside VEHS cheer sponsor Kristie Dicken.
For Sydney and Kassidy, who have known each other since their third-grade year at DeLeon Elementary School, this will be their last year together on the team.
And as co-captains of the VEHS cheerleading team this year, they're responsible for getting their team into shape before heading out to Kentucky for the National Cheerleaders Association High School Open Championship.
About half of the VEHS cheerleading team members are new to the squad, Dicken said.
"It's a lot of responsibility, but I'm very confident with my team," Kassidy said. "They listen very well and take their corrections like they're supposed to."
Sydney said it'll be hard leaving the team after her senior year.
"I'm going to miss all the girls," Sydney said. "I've never had a bond like this before."
