Hibbett Sports, a retail chain based in Birmingham, Ala., will open a store in Port Lavaca at the end of this year or the beginning of the next.

The store will occupy a 4,500-square-foot renovated space in a strip mall on state Highway 35 that previously housed the Movie Gallery.

"This is a great opportunity for Hibbett to come into a market on the cusp of a lot of growth and development," said Bob Turner, city manager for Port Lavaca. "We need a sporting goods store in Port Lavaca."

Merchandise will include footwear, athletic apparel, sporting goods equipment and items geared toward Calhoun High School. The chain will open with eight full-time and part-time employees.

Hibbett Sports looks for small to mid-sized markets where residents must drive 30 minutes to an hour to shop for sporting goods.

"We're opening a store for the community," said Eryn Vincent, real estate assistant for Hibbett Sports. "It's an option for those tired of driving out of town to shop."
