An upcoming forum aims to educate Crossroads businesspeople about franchises.

Meet the Franchisor, a joint endeavor between the University of Houston-Victoria Small Business Development Center, FranNet of South Texas and the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, takes place from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to a development center news release.

The free event, which takes place inside the UHV Multi-Purpose Room, includes presentations on leveraging successful business models, launching a recession-resistant business, building a financial future and enjoying career independence, according to the release.

Franchisors looking to expand in the Crossroads will be on hand to answer questions and discuss business opportunities while a small trade show follows the event.

Industries represented include retail, hair care and business-to-business services.

A representative with the Small Business Administration's San Antonio district office also will participate.

The forum offers residents a chance to have their questions answered, SBDC Director Joe Humphreys said in the release.

"An increasing number of professionals are in transition, and some are considering reinventing themselves as entrepreneurs," he said. "This is an excellent opportunity to learn more directly from experts."

Infrastructure improvements and ongoing growth means there are more business opportunities throughout the area, said Randy Vivian, president and CEO of the Victoria Chamber of Commerce.

"We want to help spread the word about the advantages of doing business in Victoria," he said.

Diana Trondsen, who owns FranNet of South Texas, which assists people throughout the franchise process, said people are worried about career stability and uncertain about the future.

"Opening a franchise makes great sense today," she said. "It's a more viable and stable option for a large number of people in today's market."

The first 10 people in attendance at the event receive "Street Smart Franchising," a book by Joe Mathews highlighting the reasons for success in small business.
