Considered to be the leading female force in Tejano music, Elida Reyna has made a strong mark on the Tex-Mex industry.

After winning album of the year for her 2012 release "Contigo Descubri" as well as female vocalist of the year at the 33rd annual Tejano Music Awards in October, Elida y Avante have toured nonstop.

The Tejano superstar will perform an up-close and personal show Friday at The Golden Gecko.

Since emerging on the Tejano scene in 1994, the band has several albums that qualified for gold record status and dozens of Top 5 singles, including "Duele," "Luna Llena" and "Lagrimas de Amor" - translated to "Injured," "Full Moon" and "Tears of Love."

The group includes Cande Aguilar Jr. on accordion, Noel Hernandez on bass, Leroy Villanueva on drums, Juan Martinez on keyboards, Randy Villarreal on guitar, and Epifanio Martinez on percussion and bajo sexto.

Elida was born in San Antonio and grew up in the Rio Grande Valley. She formed Elida y Avanta - or EYA if you're in the know - while she was a student at The University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg.

Since her start in music, Elida continues to expand and diversify her music and style, and at the same time stays true to her Latin roots.

"My therapy is music - interpreting my feelings in a song," she said on her website. "I think that people take that to heart. My own experiences inspire me, and I'll write songs about what I've gone through. That personal aspect makes me even more human to people. A good hook is nice, but what you have to say is more important."

A September 2000 article in Texas Monthly about the singer questioned whether Elida y Avante could become the emblem of post-Selena Tejano.

With Latin Grammy wins, a dedicated fan base and more Female Vocalist of the Year awards than a trophy case could possibly hold, Elida has become the queen of Tejano music, proving Tejano isn't just music, it's a way of life.
